SAM'S STORY

Sam* joined Berkshire Youth after being referred through the Supporting Families List. Having experienced neglect and domestic violence, Sam was living with his grandmother, separated from his sibling. At just 14, he carried a heavy burden of guilt, believing he should have been able to protect his family. On top of this, Sam was on the pathway for autism and likely experiencing trauma from his past, making it difficult for him to trust adults or open up about his feelings.

Our priority was to provide Sam with a safe, supportive space at the Waterside, where he could share what was troubling him without fear of judgment. At first, he was reluctant to engage, but over a few months, he began to trust the sessions and the professionals working with him. Through 1:1 support, Sam explored difficult topics, including his family relationships and his sexuality, learning that he is not to blame for the past and that he can express who he is authentically.

The change has been remarkable. Sam is now able to trust adults, communicate openly, and reflect on his feelings rather than internalise them. He has fewer emotional outbursts, and his relationship with his dad has improved as he can honestly express himself.

“I like coming to these sessions because it allows me to let
everything out, and me and Natalya have built a strong relationship
which makes me feel more comfortable.”

This journey highlights the transformative power of youth work, providing stability, understanding, and a space to heal and grow.
