Waterside Opening Celebration
9 November 2022
We were delighted to come together with dozens of supporters and friends last Thursday to celebrate the official opening of Waterside Centre.
Guests were treated to speeches from our President – Roger Smee MBE, The Mayor of Newbury – Gary Norman, David Seward, Kelly Leach and The Rt. Hon. Lord Benyon.
In keeping with our ethos, the evening was youth-led, with the proceedings compered brilliantly by the Waterside young leaders team. Kelly presented the young leaders with the first member cards for the centre.
Presentations were made to young people who have taken part in the BoxWise non-contact boxing programme and those who completed their Duke of Edinburgh awards with Berkshire Youth. A special shout out to Daisy who is the first young person to complete the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards with Berkshire Youth!
We were also treated to the musical talents of singer Anna and the young people from VoxFresh.
The evening culminated in the official ribbon cutting and the presentation of a keystone by Lord Benyon.
There was a strong feeling of optimism in the room, as everyone celebrated the way the Newbury community had come together to reopen the centre. We also celebrated the young people’s successes and achievements, the positive changes and effects these have had on their lives, and the importance of youth voice. David also spoke movingly about the importance of kindness – what most young people say they are looking for. Roger Smee told the assembled guests: “I feel very proud tonight!”
We would like to say a special thank our popular Charity Ambassador, Tom Holmes, for helping to present awards and for taking countless selfies with the guests! Tom is a great role model for our young people.
Thank you to everyone who came to the event and we look forward to working with you to ensure the youth and community centre continues to flourish.
